Eunhee Maeng

Eunhee Maeng (b. 1966, South Korea) is a contemporary painter whose practice transforms moments of inner reflection into a dynamic, monochromatic, calligraphic language of abstraction. Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, she paints in long, uninterrupted sessions where instinct and gesture collide. Each sweeping stroke is both a trace of presence and an opening toward the unseen, embracing the unpredictability of process as a space for meditation.

Her palette, often anchored by luminous gradations of blue, imbues the work with psychological and emotional depth. For Maeng, blue signifies healing, stillness, and introspection, serving as a bridge between inner sensation and material expression. Curves and arcs layer across the canvas to embody both the physical force of painting and the pulse of nature itself. Rather than depicting images or narratives, her paintings evoke atmospheres shaped by rhythm, silence, and time — a body of work that bridges gesture and meditation, the abstract and the elemental.

Her work has been exhibited across South Korea, including solo exhibitions at Hidden M Gallery (2024, 2023, 2022, 2020, 2019), Gallery 41 (2022), and Topohaus (2012) in Seoul. She has participated in group exhibitions at institutions such as Seojung Art Center, Gongpyeong Art Center, Kyungin Art Museum, and the Korea Craft Promotion Foundation, as well as in major art fairs including Kiaf Seoul (2020~2025) and Art Busan (2025). Maeng was selected for the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Media Canvas public art initiative in 2020, collaborated with Samsung Electronics in 2024, and was commissioned by KOTRA for a special collaboration in 2019. Her works are part of public and corporate collections, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) – Art Bank in Seoul, KOTRA, and The Frame Construction Co., Ltd., among others.
