Catelijne Boele

Overview

Catelijne Boele (b. 1996, the Netherlands) is a multidisciplinary artist based in The Hague. Centered on painting, her practice explores memory, loss, and imagination through atmospheric compositions in which colour and rhythm shape emotional and psychological landscapes. Drawing on personal experiences, observations of the Dutch landscape, and recurring motifs from nature, she creates poetic worlds that exist between reality and fantasy.

Recent work investigates the relationship between colour, rhythm, and birdsong, inspired by endangered bird species and the changing light of the Dutch landscape. Rather than depicting nature directly, Boele transforms these observations into layered paintings that evoke shifting states of memory and perception. Her installations and sculptures extend this painterly language into space, creating immersive environments where painting, landscape, and narrative converge.

Her exhibitions include After Hours at Museum Beelden aan Zee (The Hague, 2026), Zachte Drempel at See Lab (The Hague, 2026), Phantom Memorabilia at See Lab (The Hague, 2025), trees, stones, reeds at Taidetila Muijala Art Space (Reila, Finland, 2024), and I Grew Up on an Island with Only Three Directions at Josilda da Conceição (Amsterdam, 2024), among others. Boele graduated from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK), The Hague, in 2021. She received the Mondriaan Fund Voucher Development in 2024 and the Stroom Pro Invest grant in 2025, supporting the development of a new body of large-scale paintings.
