HYUNJOUNG LEE, RAQUEL MAULWURF: Dual Horizons
Namuso Gallery presents Dual Horizons: A Dialogue Between Hyunjoung Lee and Raquel Maulwurf, a duo exhibition that unites the visions of two exceptional female artists whose practices examine humanity’s complex relationship with nature. Through distinct yet resonant approaches, the exhibition reflects on themes of fragility and resilience, creation and destruction, harmony and upheaval.
Hyunjoung Lee (b. 1972, Seoul), a Paris-based Korean artist, transforms hanji (traditional Korean paper) into meditative landscapes that bridge East and West. Using natural pigments and Chinese ink, she reimagines the materiality of paper into textured, contemplative surfaces. Her works evoke a quiet reverence for the natural world, revealing its harmony and impermanence through poetic abstraction and rhythmic gesture.
Raquel Maulwurf (b. 1975, Madrid), an Amsterdam-based artist renowned for her monumental charcoal drawings, confronts the destructive forces of both nature and humankind. Working on museum board, she incises, scratches, and scars the surface with sharp tools, translating the aftermath of ecological and man-made disasters into raw, haunting imagery. Her works capture both the violence and the vulnerability inherent in the human condition.
Together, Dual Horizons stages a compelling dialogue between Lee’s serene meditations and Maulwurf’s visceral interventions. Their works, positioned in contrast yet in balance, illuminate the interdependence of creation and destruction—a duality that defines our evolving relationship with nature. Through this encounter, the exhibition invites reflection on the fragile equilibrium that sustains life and the urgent responsibility of care within our shared environment.
