Sara Ito

Sara Ito (b. 1996, Japan) is a visual artist and researcher based in the Netherlands. Her practice explores the ambiguity of cultural representation and mistranslation, examining how imagination, memory, and fantasy become intertwined with reality, heritage, and everyday rituals.
Working across photography, video, textiles, and performative installation, Ito transforms images and cultural symbols into open-ended spaces for interaction, reinterpretation, and the creation of new narratives. Rather than seeking to define fixed meanings, her work embraces the fluidity of cultural symbols and the ways they shift through personal experience, collective memory, and imagination.Through her practice, she invites viewers to engage with uncertainty and ambiguity, encouraging a slower and more reflective encounter with images, objects, and narratives. Her work explores the space between the familiar and the unknown, where multiple interpretations and new possibilities can emerge.
Ito has exhibited internationally, including the solo exhibition Wildness at Unomachi, Kamakura (2024), and group exhibitions at Paradise, The Hague (2025), and Živi Atelje DK, Zagreb (2025). She also presented the duo exhibition I SAY BLUE at Gallery John, Kamakura (2024).
