Graduation Show 2025 : Yewon Cho | Academie Minerva

Yewon Cho (b. 1998, South Korea) is a visual artist based in the Netherlands. She received her BFA from Minerva Art Academy in Groningen (2025).
Her practice explores the quiet space between body and environment, using painting as a meditative process to register moments of disconnection and reconnection. Working with canvas, paper, and linen, Cho captures fleeting emotional states - what she refers to as “sparks” that emerge in stillness and introspection. Her surfaces are built through subtle layering and attention to texture, reflecting a desire to hold on to the intangible: a sensation, a shift in light, the rhythm of breath. Cho’s work navigates the in-between: between presence and absence, motion and stillness, thought and feeling. Each painting becomes a quiet record of inner movement, grounding the ephemeral through a language of materials and restraint.
Cho has exhibited in South Korea and the Netherlands, and is nominated for the Sluijters Prize in 2025.

I once dreamt of a shooting star diving into the grass. The starlight flowed through the grass, connecting and shifting, dancing like wind. I stared, and I felt so free. This painting captures the landscape of that dream.

The past, etched with traces of longing, and the future, a realm of uncertainty. Memories of the past have made who I am, and hopes for the future keep lifting me when I fall. The present exists solely as the moment that balances between the two. It is the time I spend trying to accept that all of it is a part of me.
