Graduation Show 2025: Yingtong Zhou | HKU, Utrecht

Yingtong Zhou (b. 1998, China) is a visual artist based in the Netherlands. She earned her BFA from HKU University of the Arts Utrecht in 2025 and is currently pursuing an MFA at the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam (2025–2027). Prior to her artistic training, Zhou completed a BA in English Language and Literature at Wuhan University of Science and Technology.
Her multidisciplinary practice spans performance, drawing, and sound, often unfolding through interactive experiences that explore the subtle dynamics of intimacy, perception, and human connection. In recent works, large-scale charcoal drawings are activated through performative encounters, prompting viewers to question how they see - and are seen by - others. Zhou’s work is deeply informed by personal history, especially her relationship with her mother, and shaped by lived experiences of migration, racism, and gender-based discrimination. These layered influences converge in quiet, attentive spaces where relational tension becomes both subject and medium.
Zhou’s work has been presented in HKU Exposure at Pastoe Fabriek (Utrecht), Fairy Fountain at Haus der Statistik (Berlin), and Cambre in the Medina of Sousse (Tunisia). In 2025, she was awarded the HKU Fine Art Research Report Prize and previously participated in the Pilotenkueche residency in Leipzig (2023).
